Hair Fall in Indians — The Real Causes Nobody Talks About and How I Fixed Mine

Losing more hair than normal? This is why — and what actually helped.

Hair loss was one of the most Googled health symptoms across India. And honestly — I understand why.

For about 8 months I was losing alarming amounts of hair. Every shower drain was full. My pillow had hair on it every morning. My hairbrush was terrifying.

I tried every shampoo. Every oil. Every home remedy my relatives suggested.

Nothing worked. Because I was treating the symptom — not the cause.

When I finally found the real reasons — and fixed them — my hair fall reduced by about 80% within 3 months.

Here's everything I learned.

The Real Causes of Hair Fall in Indians

1. 🩸 Iron Deficiency — The Biggest Cause

This is the number one cause of hair fall in India — especially in women — and it is massively underdiagnosed.

Iron carries oxygen to your hair follicles. Without enough iron your follicles go into a resting phase and hair falls out in large quantities.

Get a blood test. Check your ferritin levels specifically — not just iron. Ferritin is the stored iron that feeds your follicles.

Fix — iron rich foods like spinach, beetroot, dates, pomegranate and dal. Iron supplement if prescribed by doctor.

2. ☀️ Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most widespread health issues in 2026 — ironically even in sunny India because we spend so much time indoors.

Low Vitamin D directly weakens hair follicles and causes significant hair fall.

Fix — 20 minutes of morning sunlight daily. Eggs, mushrooms and fatty fish in diet. Supplement if blood test shows deficiency.

3. 😰 Stress — The Silent Hair Killer

Chronic stress causes a condition called telogen effluvium — where large numbers of hair follicles simultaneously enter a resting and shedding phase.

The hair fall from stress typically appears 2 to 3 months AFTER the stressful period — which is why people often don't connect the two.

Fix — stress management through exercise, meditation and sleep. The hair usually regrows once stress is managed.

4. 🍽️ Poor Protein Intake

Hair is made of keratin — a protein. Without adequate protein your body literally cannot build hair.

If you skip meals, eat very little protein or follow a crash diet — hair fall will follow.

Fix — ensure adequate protein daily through eggs, dal, paneer, curd and nuts.

5. πŸ’Š Thyroid Problems

Both underactive and overactive thyroid cause significant hair fall. Thyroid problems are very common in India especially in women.

Fix — get thyroid levels tested. Thyroid medication if prescribed normalizes hair fall within months.

6. 🧴 Harsh Chemical Products

Frequent chemical treatments, heat styling, harsh shampoos with sulfates and silicones damage hair shaft and scalp health significantly.

Fix — switch to mild sulfate free shampoo. Reduce heat styling. Oil hair twice weekly.

What I Did That Actually Worked

After my blood test showed low iron and low Vitamin D — I took supplements for 3 months as prescribed.

I added these to my daily routine:

  • 🌿 Oiling hair twice a week with coconut oil
  • πŸ₯š Eating eggs every morning for protein
  • 🌱 Eating spinach at least 4 times a week
  • ☀️ Morning sunlight 20 minutes daily
  • 🧘 10 minute meditation to manage stress

Within 6 weeks — noticeably less hair in the shower drain. Within 3 months — hair fall reduced dramatically and new growth visible.

The First Step — Get a Blood Test

Please don't buy expensive hair products before getting a blood test.

Check — ferritin, iron, Vitamin D, B12, and thyroid. These cover 80% of hair fall causes.

Most hair fall is caused by something internal — not something external. Treat the root cause and your hair will respond.
